Norfolk Police say a student tried to dispose of a loaded gun after running from a probation officer at Maury High School Monday morning.
According to Karen Parker-Chesson with the Norfolk Police Department, a 17-year-old student entered school around 9:30 a.m. and met with a probation officer, who told the student he had to be searched in order to re-enter school.
Parker-Chesson said the student fled to a bathroom inside the school and the probation officer followed. The probation officer heard a loud sound near a trash can, and then found a handgun.
Police say the student admitted to throwing the handgun in the trash can. He's facing charges of possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a firearm by a minor and carrying a concealed weapon.
Earlier in the day, Karen Tanner with Norfolk Public Schools told WAVY.com security staffers and a school resource officer searched the student and discovered the gun, which she said was loaded.
The school day was not interrupted by the incident, and Tanner said parents were notified by a letter and phone call from the school.
Parents were emotional during pickup Monday afternoon. Many of them credited the school security system for saving lives.
"I am so thankful that nothing happened to any of these special children," said Judith Phillips, who has a daughter enrolled at Maury. "I'm a parent of six children and I can't imagine losing one. Never."
Most parents knew about the incident before they arrived to pick up their children. Some were still shaken up, thinking about what could have happened.
"It's pitiful, because in our day, when we were in school, things were a lot better," said Tonia Gilmore, a parent. "When you went to school, it was like another home, you were safe."
Students received letters about the incident Monday and said it was the talk of the hallways. Parents say that talk will continue at home after such a close call.
